Insight Counselling Elgin provides evidence-informed individual counselling, couple therapy, child and adolescent counselling, trauma therapy including EMDR, and online/virtual sessions. We work with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship concerns, life transitions, parenting issues and more.
Our therapists are experienced, regulated mental health professionals (Registered Psychotherapists). We list clinician bios on our site so you can choose someone whose approach and experience fit your needs. If you have questions about a therapist’s training (e.g., EMDR, couple therapy, child therapy), just ask — we’re happy to share qualifications and specialization.
Your first appointment is an intake and assessment: we’ll gather background information, discuss your goals, review consent and confidentiality, and co-create a treatment plan. You’ll learn about therapy options, estimated frequency/duration, and how we measure progress. Many clients feel relieved after the first visit because it creates a clear, collaborative path forward.
Standard therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes. Frequency depends on your goals and presenting issues: weekly sessions are common at the start; some clients move to biweekly or occasional check-ins as progress is made. For specific modalities (e.g., EMDR or couple therapy) session length and pacing can vary.
Fees vary by clinician and service type but range from $140 – $190 per 50-minute session. We provide a clear fee schedule before your first session and can discuss sliding scale or alternative arrangements where appropriate. Preference for payment is via e-transfer just before or just after each session. We also accept debit card payments in office as well as the option of putting a credit card (VISA or Mastercard) on file for session fee payments to be processed by our administrator.
While we do not offer direct billing at this time, we do provide detailed receipts that you can submit to most extended health benefit plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan and provider; we recommend contacting your insurer beforehand to confirm eligibility and any required provider designations (ie. services offered by a Registered Psychotherapist).
We ask for at least 48-hour notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. This allows us to offer the session to another client, if possible. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee of 50% of the session fee, as outlined in our policies. If you arrive late to your appointment, we’ll do our best to provide the remaining session time, but the session will still end at the scheduled time so other clients are not delayed.
We follow Ontario privacy law and professional standards: we collect, use and disclose client information only with informed consent or as required by law. Our practice complies with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) confidentiality standards and PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act) requirements; administrative staff are trained in confidentiality practices. If you’d like details about how we store records or our privacy/security measures, we would be happy to provide more information.
Yes — we provide secure, confidential online therapy for clients who live outside the area, or prefer remote sessions. We use encrypted video platforms and follow privacy best practices to protect your information. We’ll review how virtual consent and emergency planning work when you book.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some concerns resolve in a few sessions; others (complex trauma, long-standing relational patterns) require months of work. At intake we discuss goals, expected timelines, and periodic reviews so you and your therapist can track progress and adjust frequency or approach.
Yes. Some of our clinicians have experience supporting children and teens using age-appropriate approaches, play-based strategies, art therapy, and family-focused work, if needed. For minors, parental consent and involvement are handled carefully in line with ethical and legal expectations.
There is no need to bring anything specific to your first appointment. We provide a comfortable, calming environment and water to drink. If you have any questions about therapy, fees, or specific treatments, it can be helpful to write them down ahead of time and bring them with you to your first appointment.
If you’re in immediate danger or require urgent medical help, call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest emergency department. If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts and it’s not an immediate emergency, contact your therapist to set up an appointment as soon as possible. We’ll do our best to get you in quickly. You can also access 24/7 crisis lines such as the Reach Out line (519-433-2023 – talk or text) — if you’re unsure, ask us and we’ll provide additional local resources.
