Meet Laura

Laura Bonnell

Registered Psychotherapist, M. A. Counselling Psychology

Having grown up in a small city, where you recognize faces as you go through town, I know the importance of community and connection. Through my work, I have met many people who have not had support, community or even kindness throughout their lives. It can be hard to be vulnerable and reach out for help when this has been your experience. I am here to be that safe space for clients while they work out what their journey has meant to them. It is my hope to help them find connection and meaning in their own lives. I am not here just to share in client’s pain and struggles, but also in their joys, successes and laughter.

My own life has been a journey of many turns and changes, including my own struggles with mental health after the birth of my child. Since this time, I have connected with many women who have expressed that this is something that they have also experienced. It made me feel I wasn’t alone.

It can be a challenge to balance caring for a family with all the other demands of life. After these experiences, I feel passionately that naming and sharing our struggles helps to take away pain, shame and the weight of the burdens we may be carrying.

If much of this feels relatable, I’m here to help. I hope we can come together and share tears, laughter and maybe even a strong cup of tea.

Issues I treat:

  • anxiety and depression
  • relationship and communication issues
  • childhood and recent trauma
  • school/workplace stress
  • emotional distress
  • coping skills and mindfulness
  • working through separation and divorce
  • sexuality and sexual issues
  • setting healthier boundaries
  • life transitions
  • parenting
  • self-esteem/self acceptance
  • LGBTQ2S+ safe space

My approach:

As a therapist, I believe in being honest and authentic with my clients. I bring the real me to each session. I truly believe in a collaborative approach where you and I work as a team to reach your goals. I use a trauma informed approach that takes skills from Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused therapy, Somatic therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, as well as Attachment Theory. I do not believe in a one size fits all approach to therapy, and will use whatever approach meets your needs.  Sometimes the thing that helps the most is having the compassionate and empathetic ear of a person who can witness your story and walk with you as you move forward. And tea often helps, too.
